Get ready to meet your descendants. How many years will people live in the future?
01 Jan 1970Demographers have concluded that since 1990, the average life expectancy on the planet has increased by 6.2 years. In their opinion, this growth will continue, and even accelerate. Studies show that it depends on factors related to the environment and lifestyle: physical activity, level of education, even generosity, etc. Similarly, albeit slowly, the number of centenarians, that is, people aged 100 years or more, is growing. In 2015, there were almost half a million of them - this is four times more than in 1990; and by 2050, that number is projected to grow nearly sixfold.
The development of modern medicine and technology suggests that by the end of the 21st century, people will be able to live more than 125 years! This conclusion made researchers from the University of Washington. The record for life expectancy today is confirmed by Jeanne Calment from France, who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days. The researchers found that with almost 100% probability, the current life expectancy record will be broken before 2100. With a probability of 99%, someone will live to 124 years; with a probability of 68% - to 127. But will people be able to live even beyond this age?
The lead author of this study, Michael Pierce, suggests yes. In the meantime, there are even more shocking predictions! British gerontologist Aubrey de Gray believes that the first person to live to be 150 years old has already been born, and in the next two decades, the first person who will live to be 1000 years old should be born. Now is hard to say what kind of technologies will allow us to live not just for a long time but for a very long time.
Israeli professor Yuval Harari believes that in the future, people will be able to afford to merge with technology and become cyborgs, thereby being able to live forever. Humanity will prolong its life with the help of a significant amount of technology. Fitness bracelets and implanted sensors that tell you when to take a pill or see a doctor and thereby help prevent disease, and artificial organs that are grown to replace worn-out ones are all life extension technologies. Therefore, we will gradually move towards long life and potential immortality, mastering more new technologies.
