Why parachutes are not provided in planes?
27 Oct 2022The plane is considered one of the safest types of transport. However, sometimes there are accidents - during them, an oxygen mask and an inflatable vest can save lives. Interesting, why are there no parachutes for passengers on board? If they had an opportunity to jump out of a falling plane with a parachute, there would be more chances to survive. Or not? Let's analyze!
Most accidents occur during takeoff or landing
It turns out that there are several reasons why there are no parachutes on the plane. Most emergencies occur at the time of takeoff and landing of the aircraft. In this case, it's dangerous for passengers to use a parachute because it won't open in time and the person will crash.
Unsustainable conditions outside the plane
If the plane breaks down at altitude, parachutes won't save the passengers' lives either. At a standard altitude gain, the temperature outside is from -40 to -60°C, and there's practically no oxygen. In such conditions, a person cannot survive even with a parachute.
Panic prevents evacuation
In life-threatening situations, only some people can overcome panic, put on the parachute correctly, get to the jump site in an organized manner, and use the device properly. In addition, the movement of the plane is quite difficult. Due to the high speed of the falling plane, the parachutist will die.
It's too expensive
A parachute costs about $1,000. So that you can understand more concretely, the Airbus A320 aircraft has 180 seats - that is, it's +180 thousand dollars to the price of the aircraft's configuration. The cost of parachute kits for 100-500 people on each flight will be very significant, and will inevitably raise ticket prices. In addition, there will be less space on the plane, and passengers will have nowhere to store their luggage.
Not enough time
The fall of the plane takes up to 90 seconds. It's impossible to leave it in this time in an organized manner, with a parachute ready and in full force. As much as we would like to refute these claims, we won't succeed.
