A miracle of nature! Where can you meet pink dolphins?

One of the most interesting mysteries of wildlife is pink dolphins, also called "Amazon dolphins" or «inii». They are unique - this is a very rare species that, unlike ordinary ones, live in rivers. Which can also change color! We have collected for you the most interesting facts about these animals that are on the verge of extinction.

Although these dolphins are pink in color, they are born gray and slowly turn pink as they age. Males mostly have a more saturated color. An interesting fact is that when dolphins are excited, they can turn red.

They mostly live in the Amazon River, but can also be found in the caves of the Orinoco River and some of the higher reaches of the Madeira River. Pink dolphins are called one of the most endangered species among all cetaceans in the world. Among the main threats we identify, we have increasing levels of mercury pollution. Mercury is a heavy metal that causes an increase in the number of annual deaths of the pink dolphin.

They feed mostly on crabs, some small fish, small and large turtles, and catfish. Pink dolphins often swim looking down to see the crabs and turtles that are usually found in the lower reaches of the river.

Most of these dolphins are almost blind because the river waters are murky. In the process of adaptation, the eyes deteriorate, and the brain increases and develops. Unlike dolphins in the sea, these dolphins have much less developed dorsal fins.

After mating, female pink dolphins bear a baby for 9 to 12 months. Usually, this period falls from May to July, when Amazon is at its maximum level.

The Amazon pink river dolphin is the largest and most intelligent of the five freshwater species.
